Denbighshire Youth Service offers a variety of Projects, Sessions and Activities across the county in a variety of settings.
Open Access Youth Work
Open Access Youth Work usually takes place within a youth centre or a community building. An organised programme of activity is delivered by youth workers for young people which includes sports, arts and crafts, drama, independent living skills including cooking and community based projects. Young people are consulted on the things that they would like to do and are encouraged to help deliver activities for others to help young people gain confidence and increase self-esteem. Our Open Access provision is inclusive and free of charge enabling young people across Denbighshire to access.
The Youth Service Provides holiday programmes throughout the year to help young people to remain engaged in positive activity when schools are closed. This programme includes free trips and educational visits, residential experiences, DofE expeditions and foreign exchanges.
Education Youth Work
Our Educational Youth Work offers bespoke packages of education to young people who struggle with formal education or for whom life events are preventing them from accessing a formal curriculum. We have designated, trained youth workers who deliver this work both in school and offsite within our alternative education centres. Many of the courses delivered for young people are accredited and enable young people to achieve qualifications supporting them to access further education or higher learning. We pride ourselves at Denbighshire Youth Services in having many success stories of young people coming through our Educational Youth Work Progammes and going on to achieve many successes as a result.
Denbighshire Youth Service engages young people in leadership skills through its internal Young Leaders Programme. Young people start off at Level 1 where they undertake both an accredited course and work based learning. They then get to try out their new skills helping to organise and run activities for young people. This often is used to support the attainment of the Welsh Baccalaureate. Young people who wish to progress move on to the level 2 Young Leaders Scheme and are encouraged to actively take responsibility in leading activities and sessions for their peers. They also assist the Youth Service and Local Authority in making decisions that impact upon young people in Denbighshire.
Denbighshire Youth Service is committed to listening to and consulting with young people on matters that affect them. Denbighshire Youth Council is a group of young people that meet regularly to discuss ways in which they can shape the future for other young people in Denbighshire. The group meets at various locations across Denbighshire to discuss, plan and organise ways in which to consult with young people about matters that affect them. Future events include:
‘An evening with’ – an opportunity for Denbighshire Youth Council can ask questions to key stake holders
- Council Chambers introduction – An insight into where key issues are discussed and decisions are made
- Denbighshire wide consultation – Young people are consulted on about issues that affect them as a means of identifying core topics for the Youth Council to address
